Albariño has really gained traction over the last few years, going from a quirky oddball to a nearly mainstream white wine. The scenery in north-western Spain's Rias Baixas region is truly splendid with lush fields of greenery, beautiful rivers, and amazing coastline. Relatively close to the ocean, the climate can be quite damp, historically causing problems in the vineyards. Special trellisses that allow for enhanced air circulation have greatly increased the quality of these wines. Altos de Torona Albarino 2015 is a personal favorite for many reasons: it is crisp, enticing, and thirst-quenching. The aroma features stone fruit, apricot, and citrus. On the palate the wine is pure with nuances of lime, white peaches, and a sea-air quality. Delightful to drink all spring and summer. If you haven't yet experienced Albariño, this is a great one to try. Think sushi. Think grilled scallops lightly dressed with a lemon and pineapple vinaigrette.
